It starts small. A drop in water level, and you blame it on hot weather. Then the plants are sitting on damp mud instead of underwater. You run your hand along the liner and feel it, stiff, cracked, rough in places. Or maybe you find the tear. The one you have patched twice before. That is the gut punch. The realisation that another tube of repair sludge may not cut it. Patching is just delaying the inevitable. Trust me, I have been there. Your liner is done.
So, You Need Pond Relining.

The Gritty Bits Nobody Warns You About
1. Fish eviction is chaos
You need a temporary home for them. Big tub, old pond water, a bubbler. They get stressed. You will get wet. It is a whole thing.
2. Emptying the pond reveals horrors
Not really horrors, just a few decades of sludge. Black, stinky, gloriously fertile mud that your roses will love. You have to shovel it all out by hand. The smell stays in your nose.
3. The old liner fights back
It is heavy, floppy, and covered in muck. You will trip over it at least once. Then underneath are all the sharp roots and stones that wrecked it in the first place. It is really fun.
The Step You Cannot Skip
Underlayment. That soft, fleecy stuff that goes underneath the new liner. Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT skip this. It cushions everything, stops punctures from sneaky stones. It is cheap insurance. I knew a guy who skipped it. He was relining again just within a year. Never try to be that guy.
Finally, The New Liner
You may want butyl or EPDM that lasts decades. Lay it out on a warm day so it is flexible. Drape it loosely, weigh down the edges with bricks, then start filling slowly. This is the best part, watching the water push the liner into all the right shapes, the plant shelves, the deep bits. It is oddly satisfying. Then you trim the edges, hide them with rocks, and wait.
Refill and replant. Float the fish in their bags so they adjust to the temperature. Then stand back. It is a huge pain, but when it is done and the water is clear again, it is worth every second of mud and swearing. Until the next thing goes wrong. There is always a next thing with ponds.
